Shot Count Task

Florence + The Machine – No Light No Light
Run Time: 4:15
Final Shot Count: 162

The music video for Florence + The Machine's 'No Light No Light' is mostly composed of medium shots and close ups. There is a lot of cross cutting between the Florence narrative and the voodoo man narrative, with Florence singing and then falling from the building while the voodoo man dances. The video itself has an almost gothic theme to it, with the idea of religion running throughout (including the church setting and the church organ and choir in the song itself).

Contrary to most indie rock music videos, Florence + The Machine's tend to tell a story rather than showing the band playing. This could be because the band is Florence (+ The Machine), so Florence is the face of the band whereas the other members are playing the music. The shots of Florence herself fit the general conventions of indie rock music, with the band or group being the main focus of the music video, while also having a story interposed between these shots.

The pace of editing starts of slowly, reflecting the pace of the song, and then speeds up when the lyrics start to get a bit more 'desperate'. One of these shots includes Florence running, which again reflects the lyrics and the pace of editing.

The slowest shots in the video are at about 3:07, when the last note of the word 'alone' is drawn out and Florence is falling. Again this reflects the lyrics and the general pace of the song.
