Dear Moderator

Dear Moderator, welcome to my G324 A2 Media Studies blog. Navigate through my blog using the links above and follow the process of the construction of our joint music video project, including the construction of the video itself and all the peripheries (Digipak, Advert etc.). This project was completed in collaboration with Abbie Smith, Serena Chu, Thomas Beckensall and myself, and we hope you enjoy reading about the process as much as we enjoyed constructing it.

Inspirational Videos

We were inspired by Christina Perri "A Thousand Years" because of her candle scenes where it shows her holding a candle and surrounded by hundreds of candles. I liked this because it went with the song lyrics 'They have all been blown out'.  It was also a nice touch to add in the dark room, because of the lyrics 'You've left me in the dark', they melted quite quickly because they were tea lights but overall I liked how they were portrayed during that scene in our music video.

For the dress, we wanted a victorian like theme but were not sure what dress to use, Within Temptation song Frozen portrayed a very formal dress which we liked very much so we tried to find a dress similar such as the collar of the dress in Frozen is similar to our dress in our music video. It went with our theme and we're glad that we could find a dress so alike.

For this inspiration we went to the source of our song, with is 'Cosmic love'. We really liked this camera angle of how she is surrounded by lights while singing on the beat so we decided to do something similar but we got a side view instead because it looked better with the lights reflecting onto her rather than under her.

Draft Advert 2 (Thomas)

This is one of the first advert drafts I have tried to do. Below is the two images I over layered.

This the image I started with, I used this to stay with the concept of the song Cosmic Love.

I then put the image of Bronte in front of the cosmos image.

Draft Advert (Thomas)

This is the comet I made from scratch using Photoshop's paint and smudge tools.

I then got the picture of the comet I made and placed it under the image of Bronte and turned down the opacity of the top image. This made it look like the comet was going into her heart.

This is with the writing and titles added, to finish off the advert I put the white border around the main image to. I unintentionally spelt 'Album' wrong on the draft, I know not to make spelling mistakes like this on the final advert.

Final Digipak

Final Music Video

This is the second final video for our music sequence of Florence and the Machine - Cosmic love, the narrative is of a couple on there wedding day, the female persona is tired of being stuck in an small framed space. eventually she's had enough of being a painting and decides to break free leaving her husband confused at her sudden departure. She finds herself in the museum where she explores vicariously as if she was human, passing against the houses she finds some candles and begins to light the dark world which is the realistic look on life when she escaped from her optimistic lifestyle.
We changed some of the ratio on the clips in the frame sequence, dance sequence and during the reverse sequence. This is because the changing ratio was quite noticeable and so we decided to adjust the distort and adjusted the ration to -12.5 to every clip so that they all match. Some of the dance clips we lowered so that they wouldn't jump out. We also decided to leave the 'step out' movement as it is, simply because it's a lot smoother than previously. I also added more of the boat clips in as well as transitions in between this sequence and the sequence of the painting. I took some of the candle overlays off during the end of the video simply because it looked better and finally I added more jump cuts during the walking scene so when it jumped, it would hit the beat of the drums in the song.

Digipak Images

 Bronte 1 (Abbie)
This photo shoot was took for the cover of our digipak. This is a high angle photo shoot which has her face in that could show her star image.
Bronte 2 (Thomas)

We used the frame as the brand identity in the narrative of our music video.  We also decided continue this identity in our digipak.
The theme that this photo shoot represent is
she want to escape from her present situation. At the present, the frame expressed Bronte is imprisoned by her life. What in the frame is not her real feelings. She standing on her tiptoe suggested that she is worried about herself that if she could get out off this situation or not.
 Candles (Serena)

The theme that this photo shoot try to represent is the hope of the love. The candles are light in the dark but weak what just like the hope and the love that need to be protect. Which these could link back to our song 'Cosmic Love' and the story of our music video, that Bronte trying to escape from the life or I could say love she doesn't want, candles just like her hope, light in the dark and infuse her with courage. We also used candles as a props in our music video,  which could link the digipak and the music video together.

Digipak (Back)

Photo shoot of Candles
The first image I used was from internet which we cannot use it on our digipak. So I took some photos at home with dark surroundings which could represent the atmosphere that I want. After discussed with our team, we decided this is the final photo we going to use on the back of our digipak.

The reason I used Candle as the image is that I think candles could represent the name of the song 'Cosmic Love'. Candles are like stars, they are light in the dark, even the lights are tiny, it could light up a hope and warm a heart. Also, candles could add a gothic atmosphere.

First, I created a black layer, than pasted photo in.

The reason I chose black back ground with the candles is I think this combination could represent the name of the song 'Cosmic Love', glisten in the dark.

Add the'Copyright' on.

After discussed with my teacher and our team, we think we are not going to put FACEBOOK and TWITTER links on our digipak. Than I deleted those two logos and also made a change on the range of those sequences (copyrights etc.).
Re-set those labels and added the song list. The font I used was  'Arial'. I looked back to Florence's digipak. The font she used on the song list was a fancy font which was not as ceremonial as 'Arial'. After discusion with our group, we decided change the font to a florence's style.
I found this font on internet what I think it could represent florence's style. I downloaded and installed it, tried it on my image.

This is how it looks like after the font changed. I changed font to what we think it looks better and it also could represent a gothic atmosphere. We all agreed use this font as the final font that we are using it on both song list and the name of the album.

Final product.

What I have learned during this production:

1. The first thing I have learned was how to control the lighting when I take pictures. I wanted a picture of candles lighten up in the dark and it has a focus effect on. It was a dark afternoon when I took those photo shoots, I went home and lighten candles in the kitchen for safety. I was lucky that day was dark very early, when I was in the kitchen, I didn't turn the lights up, I placed and lighted those candles on a black board. I used my camera which is a compact system camera, I tried to make the photo has some focus effect. I was surprised when I put those photo on computer, it was almost the picture I wanted!!

2. I started using Photoshop to editing a photo which I could say this was the first time that I used it properly and by myself, it was the first step. By using Photoshop, I replaced the image of candles in a black back ground layers as my digipak design planning. Then I added some more sequences what a official digipak contains.

3. For a better result, the font I used was founded on line. I have been to different websites, by looking through the fonts on the web, I chose and downloaded few of those font that I thought will suit my digipak. I installed those font and tried it, then I chose the one I think it was the best.

4. I also learned what a good digipak back should contain: copyright, production company name and scan code etc. By tidy up those sections, I have improved the skills of how to make a page looks comfortable by using the Photoshop.

Digipak (Inside)

Inspirational Image
I found this image when I was on a social web. Before I saw this image, I was going to create a cosmic effect image what could relate to the name of our album 'Cosmic Love'. After I saw this image with this creative effect on, I was thinking combine both effects (cosmic effect and this effect). By the research of the tutorial of those two effect, I tried those tutorial with my photoshop skills, I realised that is not realistic for me to archive that stage at the moment. To solve this problem, I used some part of the tutorial of the effect.
                                                                  Original Photo shot
From amount of our photo shoot  we chose this one as the image what we are going to use inside the digipak. This image could represent a elegant star image from her costume, expression and body language.

Fist of all, I removed background by using Eraser in Photoshop, left only Brante in the image.

Than, I created five layers. On each layers I used different color of Brushes created the effect that looks similar to the image on the upper left conner. I changed the 'fill' on each layers to make a better image.  I did a lot research on the effect of the image on the upper left conner, but I haven't found any tutorial of the effect, so i had a look on other tutorial which a part of the tutorial have similar effect. After trying those effect, I found that the best way for me to create the effect is using the brushes.
So this is how it looks like.

I used a online photo edit web called 'Meituxiuxiu' which is a Chinese web. This website is like a easy photoshop for the people who want to edit their photo, people could use it to edit their photo. By using this, I lighten the image that I already have, then I add some stars effect on, because I think this could represent the cosmic.

For another page of the digipak, I used the same gener as the one had Bronte on. I add some clouds and also a moon on, that could distinguish those pages.

For the middle of the inside of the digipak, where the disc are, I also used that image with no moon, no clouds and no Bronte on.

The color I used in the design of the digipak are in sharp contrast. The reason of this is I want to create a digipak that when people open it, they will surprised.
